Nick Saban doesn’t want part of the abyss
Most of the college football world may want to change, but Nick Saban will avoid an abyss he’s sure would follow retirement. He spoke about it recently with a conviction that is equal to the passion he shows when coaching his players.
In a way similar to a Dylan Thomas remember not to tread carefully, Saban, just at the thought of retirement, demanded to know “retiring for what?” There are other things in Nick Saban’s life other than football, but there is nothing in his present and future life that can replace football.
It really is that simple and nobody knows it better than Saban. Saban knows the ‘abyss’ would follow coaching football. Whether he thinks of the abyss as a bottomless chasm, or as a good Catholic, he in its biblical definition, as a “realm of demonic spirits” doesn’t matter. Nick Saban doesn’t want to be a part of either one.
Alabama football fans rejoice whenever the R-word is mentioned to Saban, and he scornfully refutes thinking about it. It doesn’t show up because there is the slightest indication that the GOAT slipped in any way. It just keeps coming because so many coaches and so many fans of so many “other” schools dream of the day Nick Saban retires.
Physically and mentally Nick Saban is stronger than many men who are ten years or more younger. He doesn’t slow down. He won’t let up. He still wants his boys to impose their will and make the other boys stop.
As he had said before, he doesn’t remember all the wins, but he remembers all the losses in detail. They feed his seemingly inexhaustible determination.
Every other SEC coach must believe that Nick Saban cannot last forever. They are right. Saban is human and at some point there will be a transition. About a year ago, we proposed that Alabama give Saban a lifetime contract. It would be mostly symbolic as his contract renewals happen when and for as long as he wants. But a lifelong relationship would enable Saban to say honestly that he will never, ever be involved in Alabama football.
In addition, it would be a slap in the face to the opponent’s coaches, who are confident that they will outlive him. Most of them probably know that they can’t outrun or outsmart Saban. With a few rare and temporary exceptions, they can’t outsmart him. All that remains is to survive him.
