No fans allowed at Gopher men's hockey tournament against Penn State due to coronavirus
The weekend’s Big Ten tournament semi-finals men's hockey game between the Gophers and Penn State will be played in front of zero fans as Penn State University has acted quickly to curb the spread of the new coronavirus.
The semi-final match will be played on Saturday at 6 p.m. at University Park, Pennsylvania, and all fans who bought tickets will receive a refund. Fans are not permitted to participate in any Penn State home sports competition. The only people authorized to participate in PSU competitions are:
- Key personnel designated by Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics
- Participating student-athletes, coaches and staff
- Families of student-athletes, coaches and participating employees
- Media
- Penn State is recruiting.
The University of Minnesota hasn't taken a similar step to ban fans from sporting events, but it all online courses only until April 1 at least.
As of Wednesday afternoon, five cases were confirmed in Minnesota.
Minnesota beat Notre Dame last weekend to exit the quarterfinals, with Sunday's decisive game played before an announced crowd of 2,039 fans inside the 3M Arena in Mariucci, which has a capacity 10,000 people.
"We regret that our fans cannot attend the affected home events. However, many of these competitions will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, the ESPN or BTN2Go family of networks," PSU said in a statement.
Gopher hockey fans can watch the game on Big Ten Network, stream it on the FOX Sports app, or listen to it on AM 1130 KTLK or on 103.5 FM HD.
