The Baton Rouge hockey team officially has their team name

A new hockey team will hit the ice in the capital later this year and we have all the details.

It has been over 20 years since professional hockey was played in Baton Rouge. That drought ends in October, when a new team will call the city home.

The team’s ownership group hosted three exhibition games at Raising Cane’s Center earlier this year to test the waters and see if the city would support hockey’s return. The residents of Baton Rouge exceeded their expectations with more than 20,000 fans watching the three games.

I entered the naming contest on their Facebook page, but unfortunately did not win. Here where my entries:

They eventually went for the name Baton Rouge Zydeco. Even though I think my names were much sturdier for a sports team, I really like the name they chose. I like the way their logo de Horace Wilkinson Bridge that’s the first thing you’ll see as you round the bend on I-10 before entering Baton Rouge. It is certainly an iconic structure. And of course you can’t go wrong with Zydeco, it’s such a special part of our culture here in Louisiana.

I can’t wait to take my son to the capital and start playing hockey. I’ve been wanting it since the Ice pirates left Lake Charles, and that was way back in 2001.
