Scottie Scheffler wins the Memorial Tournament
DUBLIN, OH Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler posted a one-shot victory Sunday afternoon at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, won for the fifth time in his last eight starts and joined Justin Thomas (2017), Jordan Spieth (2015) and Jason Day (2015) as the only golfers to win at least five PGA TOURs won tournaments in a season in the last 10 years.
Scheffler's current historic streak includes victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship, the Masters, the RBC Heritage and the Memorial Tournament. He joined Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win THE PLAYERS, the Masters and the Memorial in the same season. Scheffler is the first player heading into the US Open (which starts later this week) with at least five PGA TOUR victories, including a major in a season, since Arnold Palmer in 1962.
Scheffler posted a 72-hole total of 8-under 280 (67-68-71-74) and earned a one-shot victory over runner-up Collin Morikawa (7-under 281) at the Memorial. Scheffler entered Sunday's final round with a four-shot lead, but reached the 18th hole Sunday just one shot ahead of Morikawa. Both players made approach shots that bounced off the green into the rough, and both chipped to about six feet. Scheffler buried his par putt to earn the win.
The Memorial Tournament win was Scheffler's fifth win of the season and 11th career PGA TOUR win. Scheffler earned $4 million from the signature event win, bringing his earnings this year to more than $24 million and breaking his own PGA TOUR season winnings record he set last year.
The victory marked the 103rd official PGA TOUR victory for the University of Texas Men's Golf program, achieved by 17 several individuals throughout the TOUR's 98-year history.
