Men's Rowing Races in IRCA Postseason Awards

The five All-Americans scored the most of any program in the country.

Barrell named athlete of the year

BERKELEY The California men's rowing team continues to garner post-season recognition as Tommy Barrell won the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and five rowers were named to the IRCA All-Americans list this week, achieving the most of any program in the country.

Alex Baroni, Luca Vieira And Noah's anger were included in the first team at the time Harry Manton And Wilson Morton were named to the second team. This marks Vieira's third straight All-America nod and the first for Anger, Baroni, Manton and Morton. All five were members of this year's V8+, which took home the bronze medal at the IRA National Championships.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is the latest in a list of academic honors Barrell has collected during his career. He had a 3.96 grade point average with a major in Business and graduated this spring from the Haas School of Business, which also earned him the Pac-12's Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. He also won the 2024 Neufeld Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to the graduating male and female seniors with the highest grade point average of all Cal student-athletes. Barrell, a two-time IRCA Scholar-Athlete and two-time Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll member, was chosen by his teammates to earn the team's Dean Witter Award for leading the team culture and setting the example of loyalty, skill and mind. A native of Auckland, New Zealand, he helped the Bears to back-to-back IRA national championships and Pac-12 titles in 2022 and 2023. With the IRAs, he rowed the stroke chair for the 2V8+ that finished first and took home the Kennedy Cup in 2023, second in 2022 and third in 2021. This year, Barrell rowed most of the season on the stroke chair in the V8+.

As a freshman from Ulm, Germany, Anger raced the entire season in the V8+, spending most of the year in the four-seat position. He was the only freshman on Cal's best boat. Before arriving at Cal, Anger helped Germany to a bronze medal in the men's eight at the 2023 U23 World Rowing Championships.

Baroni, a sophomore from Perth, Western Australia, rowed the seven-seater V8+ for most of the season and was also named to the All-Pac-12 Team. As a freshman in 2023, he rowed the entire season in the F8+ before switching to the 3V8+ at the IRA Championships and helping his team take first place and win the Stewards Cup. Last summer, Baroni also competed for Australia at the 2023 U23 World Rowing Championships in the men's eights, finishing fourth in the A final.

Manton, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, spent almost the entire season in the five-seater of the V8+. Prior to this season, he competed in the 2023 U23 World Rowing Championships, finishing fourth in the men's eight. In 2023, Manton competed in the 2V8+ for most of the season before rowing in the V4+ which won the national title at the IRA Championships.

Morton, a junior from Summit, New Jersey, competed in the V8+ double-seater for most of the season and earned All-Pac-12 honors. As a sophomore in 2023, he rowed in the 2V8+ that went undefeated all season and helped his team win first place at the 2023 IRA Championships and take home the Kennedy Challenge Cup.

Vieira has served as helmsman for the V8+ for the past three seasons, including back-to-back IRA National Championships in 2022 and 2023. He was also named to this year's All-Pac-12 list and was an IRCA Scholar for the third time Athlete. consecutive year. In 2023, Vieira was named IRCA helmsman of the year.
