Facing one of the biggest serves on the ATP Tour, Carlos Alcaraz had little time to delve into his latest campaign at the China Open in Beijing.
However, the top seed quickly adapted to the firepower of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the ATP 500 on Friday, where he produced a strong performance for a 6-4, 6-4 first-round win. Alcaraz broke the Frenchman's serve in the opening game of each set, beating his fellow 21-year-old in 81 minutes.
The plan was to get as much return as possible, Alcaraz said. To be honest, it wasn't easy. He served 230 or 240 [km/h] almost every serving. Second set, 210 or 215. So it was not easy to play against him. He's a really powerful player. Big serves, big shots from the baseline. So I really had to be focused. That was the plan. Try not to make too many mistakes and play aggressively from the baseline.

Alcaraz converted both break points he earned in his first Lexus ATP Head2Head clash with Lyon champion Mpetshi Perricard. Although the Frenchman finished the match with 83 percent (20/24) of the points behind his first throw, his victory bid was undermined by errors at the start of each set, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
In the first game of the match I came back quite well and played good points from the baseline, Alcaraz said. In the first game of the second set he made three double faults, so it helped me a lot to break serve. After that I had to be very focused on the next games, and I'm very happy that I did that.
After securing the victory in just his third tour-level match against a younger opponent, Alcaraz improved to 44-9 for the season. The Spaniard, whose qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals was confirmed earlier this week, will face Tallon Greekpoor in the second round.
Alcaraz aims for a deep run in Beijing to keep the pressure on Jannik Sinner in the battle to finish as ATP Year End No. 1, presented by PIF. Alcaraz is currently third in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, but can rise above Alexander Zverev into second place by reaching the semi-finals in the Chinese capital. In the Live Race he is 2,990 points behind Sinner, who also enters the second round in Beijing.
