Two Kent Seniors in the England 'Grey Ashes' squad

Kent senior cricketers Jim Phillips and Simon Routh have been named in the England Over-60s 'Grey Ashes' squad to play Australia this winter.

There has been a change of captain since the Pakistan series, with vice-captain Edward Gordon Lennox stepping in to replace long-term skipper Richard Merriman, who has decided to take a break from international cricket.

In Gordon Lennox's first series as captain, he is joined by three new faces on the international stage. Razi Ahmed, Mark Eames and Melvyn Holmes all made their England debuts in the recently completed Tri Nations series against Scotland and Wales.

Outside of the Ashes, England finished second at the 2024 Over-60s World Cup in February before beating Pakistan 3-1 in the recent English summer. While the team won the Caribbean Cup in 2023 and in addition to the Gray Ashes success, were joint winners of the Canada Cup.

Australia defeated England in the World Cup final and shared the Canada Cup with the Three Lions a few months earlier.

The two old enemies have met 35 times in cricket before the 1960s, with England winning 23 times, Australia winning 10 times, drawing once and drawing once. The first official meeting between the teams took place on 16^e August 2009 at Sheffield United's Bawtry Road ground England won by nine wickets.
