Women's hockey let down by Union
SCHENECTADY, NY It was the first game of the ECAC women's ice hockey season for Harvard, which traveled to New York to take on the Union Garnet Chargers. The Crimson (1-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) fought to the finish, but suffered their first loss of the season to the Garnet Chargers (3-6-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) .
How it happened
- The Crimson made their way to Messa Rink to take on the Union Garnet Chargers in the 41st meeting between the two parties in the program history.
- After the puck dropped, the Crimson immediately applied pressure, putting together a trio of shots on goal in the first two minutes. After Harvard's surge, Union returned with a counterattack, but a few saves failed to materialize Emily Davidson and two blocked shots helped stop Harvard Union.
- After a fast start, both teams went on the defensive. The pace of play remained high as the puck passed back and forth across the ice, with only one face-off occurring in a twelve-minute span.
- Maria Pape And Mia Biotti both had good looks at the net that was knocked aside in the first period, making up a pair of the Crimson's five shots on net in the first period.
- Union put a tally on the board late in the first period to take a 1–0 lead into the first intermission.
- Each team had a power play opportunity early in the second period, with Union going first to get the skating advantage. Harvard didn't allow a single shot to reach Davidson to kill the penalty. On its own power play opportunity, the Crimson generated a pair of scoring chances but couldn't find the rope as the team continued to chase the tying goal.
- Davidson made four more saves over the next few minutes to hold off the Garnet Chargers. Union managed to put another shot into the net late in the second period and took a 2-0 lead late in the second period.
- After the second period, Union had a 2-0 lead over the Crimson. In the second period the score was 7-7.
- The Crimson stormed out of the gate in the third period and had an early power play opportunity when it looked to make its move. Harvard had two good scoring opportunities denied due to the skater advantage, while Union held off the rush to end the power play. Lap and Kaley McDonald recorded the recordings for the Crimson in the series.
- Union kept the Crimson off the scoreboard for the remainder of the action, earning a 3-0 win in the ECAC opener.

Harvard will be back on the ice tomorrow afternoon as it looks to bounce back against RPI. The Crimson and the Engineers drop the puck at Houston Field House and on ESPN+ at 3 p.m.
