Why Penn State football's Drew Allar finds a way to lose in a big way again
MIAMI GARDENS, FL. It was almost silent in the Penn State football locker room as the final stretch of Thursday night passed.
They tried to take it all in, to make sense of their crushing ending here at the foot of Hard Rock Stadium, which never felt like it was going that way.
How they lost a late lead, lost the College Football Playoff semifinal to Notre Dame, 27-24, lost their chance at the national championship game.
How their entire season ended so abruptly. Once again, it didn't end the way it could have.
And why, despite all their successes, they experience the same heartbreak they have felt before at so many critical moments.
The Nittany Lions found a heartbreaking way to lose to the Top 10 Fighting Irish. Lost excruciatingly in yet another penultimate, signature moment of victory.
Another spotlight that defined the night that slipped by.
It felt like perhaps assistant coach JaJuan Seider was speaking for all those sitting bewildered at their lockers behind him.
“It sucks. Because there's only one team moving forward and you're not. It's hard to put into words,” he said. “You appreciate the opportunity you have here, but it doesn't mean anything if you're not ready. And we're not done.'
Seider, who coaches Penn State's exemplary running backs, talked about “getting over the hump” in big moments, about “winning games like this,” about “being able to finish at the end.”
“We're so close…”
That makes it all the more difficult for Penn State and its supporters.
Penn State Football: Why can't it ever win games like this?
That feeling has hung over this program since James Franklin started building it back, sometimes faster than expected. That first year, in 2014, he lost in double overtime to eventual national champion Ohio State.
The Lions capped off their stellar 2016 season with a walk-off loss to USC.
The only losses the following season? By one point to Ohio State, and on the last game at Michigan State.
It went like this: the Lions are getting better at beating the teams where they have decisive advantages in talent and depth; losing almost every test when that is not the case.
This year? They couldn't score twice inside the 5-yard line against Ohio State and lost by a touchdown. They couldn't finish a late comeback against Oregon.
On Thursday evening in South Florida…
They gave up two leads. A wide receiver didn't catch a single pass. And the immensely talented Drew Allar, the nation's top quarterback recruit, inexplicably threw a bad interception at the very worst time.
Then his defense broke.
And then his Lions found a way to lose to yet another top opponent.
Losing in a way that makes it all feel even worse.
Again.

It's just terrible. We've sacrificed so much, you go through so much, and to come up short, especially since we're so close… It's heartbreaking,” defensive tackle Dvon J-Thomas said shortly after playing his final college game.
“When you get to this level, the margin for error is so small, razor thin, and that's the difference in the game…”
The Penn State difference finally gets the kind of win that resonates beyond the night.
The difference when you go to the national title game.
The kind of situation it still has to learn to overcome, one way or another, under Franklin.
One that, fair or not, will resonate for the next seven months.
