Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has condemned the country's 'hero worship' and 'icon culture' behind India's slump during every transition period.
Manjrekar explained how even in the hero worship that has affected India the most in the transition phase of Indian cricket and the icon players are dragging the team down. India has lost back-to-back Test series against New Zealand (0-3) at home and against Australia (1-3) away.
“The main reason behind this is the icon culture we have in India and the hero worship of certain players,” he wrote in his column for Hindustan Times.
“Whether it's in 2011-2012 or now, it's the same scenario playing out: iconic players prominently doing the opposite of what they've done their entire careers, dragging the team down with their diminished performances.”
Manjrekar pointed out how India lost 0-8 to England and Australia in 2011-12, where players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid struggled. However, Dravid scored four centuries in India's 0–4 defeat by England, and averaged 76.83, but he fared poorly in Australia.
“When it comes to the big players, we as a country are simply not able to remain rational,” he said.
“Cricket logic goes out the window and then the selectors hope the player leaves alone so they don't look like the thugs who brutally ended the career of a great whom millions of fans adore. They're just afraid of the backlash.”
Manjrekar gave an example of Australia, where all-time great Ricky Ponting was dropped after his performance dropped. Even in this series they dropped Nathan McSweeney after he had a fight against Gabba. but was replaced by a 19 year old Sam Konstas. Then all-rounder Mitchell Marsh paved the way for Beau Webster in Sydney.
“Nathan McSweeney was dropped to bring in Sam Konstas. Mitchell Marsh was dropped for Beau Webster. Both selections did wonders for Australia's chances of winning the series,” he said.
Manjrekar has also advised chairman selector Ajit Agarkar to take a tough decision on the current Indian icon players.
“Does Rohit Sharma still have the potential to make up for all his recent failures? I think the current selection committee has a pretty good idea of that.
“But now comes the hard part: can the committee actually make a difficult decision that fits their observations? If Mr Ajit Agarkar wants to make a clean cricketing decision, irrespective of who the player is, we have to make his job easier.”
