Key role played by Lord Swaythling in the presentation of the trophy bearing his family name

The Swaythling name has been synonymous with the ITTF World Championships since its very beginning 100 years ago – and there was a great full-circle moment as the centenary celebrations came to a head at the OVO Arena Wembley on Sunday.

The men’s team champions have received the Swaythling Cup since 1926. This was donated by Lady Baroness Swaythling, mother of Ivor Montagu, the first President of the ITTF.

On Sunday, Charles Montagu, now Lord Swaythling, was a key part of the awards ceremony as China once again lifted the historic trophy,

During the ceremony, he presented the trophy with his family name to ITTF President Petra Sörling.

He said: “It was an honor for me to be invited to represent the Swaythling family for the presentation ceremony and to be able to commemorate the 100th year of the Swaythling Cup.

“From its humble beginnings, with just a handful of countries involved, the Swaythling Cup is now one of the most important sporting events in the world, involving more countries than any other sport.

“It takes a lot of hard work from a dedicated organizing body, many of whom donate their time for the love of the sport, to create an event that combines spectacle with attention to detail into a seamless competition that is world class in every respect.

Lord Swaythling watched the championships for a total of five days and his daughter Delilah, a Grammy-winning singer, was also present on Sunday.
