Wexford students add value to their community through the installation of gazebos, table tennis and solar energy in the local park

Students from Bridgetown College in Co Wexford have played a crucial role in the design and development of projects in their local community as part of a project delivered in partnership with the county council. Now in its second year, the Bridgetown Youth Adds Value Project allows students to identify ideas for improvements or additions they would like to see in their area.

In the first year of the project, transition year students conducted research to find suitable products and were required to provide full costs for their proposals. The completed proposals were submitted to a review committee, which reviewed and rated each proposal.

As a result of their work, flower beds and picnic benches were installed in the park in Bridgetown, along with a basketball net, solar-powered lighting and a zebra crossing connecting the park to the supermarket.

For the second year, eleven proposals were submitted to the evaluation committee, three of which were approved: a gazebo, an outdoor table tennis table and solar-powered lighting around the walking route in the park. Funding for the project was provided by Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) and Sports Active Wexford.

Councilor Ger Carthy, cathaoirleach of the RMD, said he was “very proud to support this valuable project”. “It not only improves the provision in the park, but it also gives young people the opportunity to have a say in the facilities available in their area and to take pride in the facilities in the park,” he added.

Prospective students for the 2026/2027 academic year are already discussing possible proposals for additions and improvements that they would like to see in their field.
