SEC, Big Ten dominate college football thanks to huge advantages over other conferences
In addition to name, image and likeness influencing how college football teams are built and which programs succeed, conference realignment has also fundamentally changed the sport.
The “old” version of the Pac-12 no longer exists. Somehow, the Washington Huskies, Oregon Ducks, USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins are Big Ten teams. The Atlantic Coast Conference now features teams playing miles from the Pacific Ocean in Stanford and Cal. While the SEC is more consistent geographically, it’s still strange to think of Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma as “SEC” teams instead of the traditional Big 12.
Why did this realignment occur? There is an obvious answer: money.

Simply put, the Pac-12 collapsed because its top programs fell behind financially. USC, a historic program in the nation’s second-largest media market, generated less revenue from television contracts than a team like Purdue. Because Purdue was in the Big Ten and USC was in the Pac-12.
WHICH TEAMS HAVE THE WEIEST STRENGTH OF THE SCHEDULE TAILORED TO THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON?
Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC for a bigger slice of the television revenue pie. More money equals better facilities, better coaches, better recruiting. And now that schools are allowed to pay football players directly, the chances of better rosters are greater.
Making more money never hurts, but when you look at the latest revenue estimates between conferences, it becomes clear why there has been a conference realignment. And why it might not be over yet.

The SEC brings in by far the highest average revenue per team at $215.5 million. Their deal with ESPN is huge, and thanks to their large, passionate fan bases, attendance is consistently high throughout the conference. Then there’s the Big Ten, which easily clears the ACC but trails the SEC by tens of millions. That’s the power of their television deal and the consistency across fan bases.

Looking at the dynamics at both conferences right now, it matches up almost perfectly. The SEC in the post-Nick Saban era is strong from top to bottom. Georgia, Alabama, Texas, OU, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida… there’s quality and unparalleled depth. The Big Ten at the top can match anyone, but the bottom of the conference isn’t as strong.

This data also makes clear why the ACC and Big 12 have generally fallen behind their counterparts: They simply don’t make as much money. Miami has turned into an NIL powerhouse and returned to the top of the sport. But consistently, ACC teams generate less revenue and have less success. Same with Big 12 teams in the post-Texas-OU era. Texas Tech has used NIL to its advantage thanks to Cody Campbell, but other programs are clearly struggling to keep up.
Does increased revenue automatically mean the SEC and Big Ten will win every championship from now on? No, not necessarily. After all, Miami was a few plays away from beating Indiana. But bringing in more money is a significant benefit. And if there are opportunities for even more conference realignment, it wouldn’t be surprising to see ambitious programs move on to greener pastures.

Would Miami head to the SEC under the assumption that bringing in tens of millions in additional revenue each year could make them a force to be reckoned with? What about Notre Dame, would they move to the Big Ten if their unique television arrangement changes?
It seems impossible, and yet Oregon, which was in the Big Ten just a few years ago, did just that.
