No. No. 3 WashU women’s tennis returns to title play with semifinal victory over No. 5 Babson
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 3 women’s tennis team from Washington University in St. Louis defeated No. 5 Babson 4-1 in the national semifinals to advance to the title match for the second straight year. The Bears will play No. 4 Wesleyan in the national championship game on Thursday at 1:00 PM ET.
Wesleyan defeated No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-3 to advance.
Double
Babson took a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point with wins over No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
No. 1 junior Eleanor Sagittarius and sophomores Caitlin Bui fell to No. 4 Matia Cristiani and Sandra Sikharulidze 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Slowik himself and freshmen Lily Brecknock lost to Dana Kamal and Jolie Wang 6-3 in the No. 3 doubles match.
No. 10 seniors Eliana Hanna and sophomores Ally Lin trailed Alessandra Cristiani and Elizabeth Shu 4-3 at No. 2 doubles when the point was taken.
Singles
Bui won the first singles point for the Bears, beating Shu 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Senior Nina Moravek took the next point, beating Jolie Wang 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Senior Amber Edmonds Tina Liu was up 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5 singles.
Lin won the match for WashU, defeating Alessandra Cristiani 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4 singles.
No. 5 Hanna won the first set of No. 1 singles against Matia Cristiani 7-6 (7-5) before falling 6-2 in the second set. At the end of the match she was down 1-0 in the third set.
No. 19 Archer won the first set against Sikharulidze 6-4 at No. 2 singles and lost the second set 6-1. The third set ended in a 3-3 draw as the match was finally decided.
It is the second time in program history that the Bears have reached the title game. The first time was last year, when they won everything.
