Which Central Ohio boys tennis players have won OHSAA district titles?
Olentangy Liberty senior Shane Hand returns to the Division I boys tennis tournament as a two-time reigning district champion, but for him the process of getting back wasn’t anything earth-shattering.
“Just mental maturity, knowing when to shoot, being a consistent player and working harder and fighting for every point,” Hand said. “That’s what gets you through games, without hitting winners and making crazy shots.”
The Butler signee and three-time state qualifier took care of business May 23 at Olympic Indoor Tennis, with Olentangy freshman Aarush Andey 6-2, 6-2 in a district semifinal and Upper Arlington junior Owen Hawley 6-1, 6-3 in the final.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to May 28 and 29 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason. Those moorings were fixed on the first day of the district, May 20.
Hawley, now a two-time state qualifier who advanced in doubles a year ago, defeated Olentangy senior Gavin Cheung 6-1, 6-3 in the other semifinal.
Cheung defeated Andey 6-1, 7-5 in the third-place match.
New Albany senior Tyler Thomas and freshman Brady Kattan advanced to the doubles title, defeating UA senior WK Abouhassan and junior Charlie Freiburger 6-1, 6-0.
While Abouhassan and Freiburger had to earn a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 semifinal victory over Olentangy Orange seniors Devan Patel and Shailen Patel, Kattan and Thomas had byes in the finals after Orange senior Nihkil Bhimireddy and sophomore Sid Sharma forfeited the semifinals – and the third-place match – due to a family commitment for Bhimireddy.
The final two rounds were moved indoors from Upper Arlington due to rain, as were the first two rounds on May 20.
Bexley wins OHSAA Division II district titles
Both Division II finals ended in sweeps for Bexley players.
Freshman Harrison Lessard defeated senior teammate Amiya Bowles 6-1, 6-1 for the singles championship.
In doubles, senior Adrian Schiff and junior Henry Lessard defeated Columbus Academy junior Sujay Billakanty and freshman Arjun Satyapriya 6-0, 6-1. Lessard is looking for his second consecutive state title in doubles, after winning last year with older brother Sam, and a third straight title overall, after winning the singles as a freshman.
The district champion and runner-up advanced to state in singles and doubles.
