Serena Williams is considering returning to top tennis on the grass courts of the Queen’s Club in London in ten days. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has been back in the drug testing pool for six months and therefore has the green light to make her comeback at the age of 44.
The Served podcast, hosted by former world No. 1 Andy Roddick and veteran journalist L Jon Wertheim, reported that Williams will seek a doubles wildcard alongside Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old Canadian who is ranked ninth in singles. The second edition of the Queen’s WTA 500 event starts on June 8, a day after the end of the French Open.
There is plenty of speculation about Williams’ possible return and the American has been training in Florida for months. She has collaborated with world number 79 Alycia Parks, who posted a video of them working together in March.
Williams has not competed since the 2022 US Open. Although she was careful not to say she was retiring, Williams appeared on the list of retired players until she returned to the drug testing pool last year.
Naomi Osaka, who overtook Williams at the Met Gala this month and is competing in the French Open, was excited about her idol competing again: “I don’t really care [the] tennis,” she said. ‘I think it’s good for me. I’ll have a lot of fun. But overall I think it will get people into watching tennis, which they always bring with them.
“I will definitely be tuned into the first match. Everyone knows Serena and [her sister] Venus was my role model growing up, so it will be cool to see her back on the field.”
World No. 5 Madison Keys said: “Serena Williams playing tennis is only good for tennis. Let’s face it, we all want to watch Serena. I’m excited. I’m going to look at some of the participant lists every now and then, see what turns up. But she’s the GOAT, so it would be great if she comes back. You can watch the history every time she’s on the court, so why not watch more?”
