The player the Nazis recognized: Alojszy Ehrlich and the golden age of Polish table tennis | Article
Ehrlich played throughout Europe and moved to France in the 1930s, although he continued to play the sport for Poland. As Osiński notes, he also played in Cairo in 1939, after being invited by King Farouk I to become the official coach of the Egyptian team.
The same year, war broke out in Europe, and Ehrlich, Osiński says, wanted to go to India to play practice matches, but could not sail. He wrote a letter to the Polish authorities in 1940 asking permission to play in the United States and donate the proceeds to the Polish army in the west. Apparently he was also on the front line at Reims, transporting Polish soldiers through the Pyrenees, and found information he could use for deployments – he knew eight languages, which must have helped. He ended up in hiding in the Vichy region, but was captured in June 1944 and spent eight months in Auschwitz. When he was sent to Auschwitz, his career as a table tennis player saved him – he was recognized by a Nazi who ordered him to defuse bombs.
After the war, Ehrlich remained in France, although he could no longer play for Poland due to the communist authorities, who were critical of anyone remaining in the West. He reached the quarter-finals of the world championship in 1947 and was invited to Poland for the 1949 competition. He brought clothing and food because he had heard that there was a famine. The authorities banned him from the final because he did not have a registered address in the country. He was also threatened with prison if he did not leave.
Ehrlich also triumphed later: he won bronze at the French championship at the age of 50 and continued to play until he was 75. He also coached Swedish players in Saint Tropez and even invented a table tennis robot.
[Splitting in progress… ⌛]For Poland’s own table tennis story, there were new heroes: Andrzej Grubba, who was born 40 years after Ehrlich, also won many competitions, including three bronze medals at the world competition and one gold medal at the World Cup. Leszek Kucharski was also a table tennis champion, winning bronze at the 1985 and 1987 World Championships, and silver at the 1989 World Championships. Lucjan Błaszczyk has also achieved recent success, winning gold at the 2002 European Championships.
So the Polish table tennis story is longer and stranger than any film has been able to tell – and Ehrlich is proof. A survivor, a spy, an inventor, a coach, still playing at 75: the honey scene is the part that shocked Marty Supreme‘s audience, but it may be the least surprising thing about him.
