Bow Boys’ tennis secures place in the semi-finals after a big win

As it started to drizzle over Bow’s tennis courts on Friday, the smell in the air smelled of victory.

After winning four singles matches, the third-seeded Falcons boys tennis team (12-3) needed just one doubles win. They won all three quickly, beating No. 6 Winnacunnet in the Division II quarterfinals, 7-2.

“This is the strongest lineup I’ve ever had since I’ve been coaching,” Bows head coach Jay Yvars said.

The Hall brothers, junior Carter and freshman Ethan, were the first to topple the dominoes. Playing second and third behind junior Milo Cocola, the Hall’s were on fire.

Ethan Hall won his #2 match over Drew Berry. He took an early 4-1 lead and held on comfortably to win 8-2. His consistency was crucial in causing unforced errors and winning early points on his serve.

Carter Hall finished his match almost at the same time as his younger brother in a similar fashion. Powerful serves and smart play from the backline and at the net saw him beat Aurelius Curro 8-2.

“We worked doubles pretty much every day, especially in our singles we were pretty confident,” Carter Hall said.

No. 4 junior Jacob Gancarz defeated Bobby MacIver 8-2. He won his final serve in a clean sweep, going up 40-0 and finishing with power. Then No. 6 junior Jack French closed out his singles with an 8-2 score against Jacob Potuin.

The longest single games were Bow’s only two losses of the afternoon.

Cocala faced fearsome sophomore No. 1 David Cucceu, who advanced to the third round of the singles tournament as a freshman last year. Cocala fell, 8-4. The other loss came to Sawyer Whiting, who fell 8-4 to Jake Powers.

Both redeemed themselves with dominant doubles: Cocala with Jacob Gancarz and Whiting with Jack French.

The singles advantage gave Bow comfort going into the doubles match. None of them were ever up for debate.

“When you come in 4-2, it takes a lot of pressure off the doubles,” Yvars said.

Playing at No. 1, the Hall brothers took an early lead, 4-1. Cocola and Gancarz played at number 2 and also took an early 4-1 lead.

As the Winnacunnet players looked around and the rain began to fall, their hopes of defeating Bow grew dim.

The victory over Winnacunnet (9-6) also meant redemption and a new beginning. Bow had lost to the Warriors in the season opener and was eliminated by them 9-0 in the quarterfinals last year.

The Falcons have come a long, long way since then.

Next, they face one of the most dominant teams in the division, Hollis-Brookline. On May 18, the No. 2 Cavaliers (13-2) nearly defeated them 8-1.

Yvars said he feels good about his team’s chances. He believes his team has the momentum to pull it out.

Bow will face them outdoors in the semifinals on Tuesday at 4pm.

“I think individually and collectively as a team it was incredible,” Ethan Hall said of how the team can win. “We just want it more than they do and play as best we can.”
