T-Mobile Arena is the first in 52 years to host the Stanley Cup and Frozen Four | Golden Knights
T-Mobile Arena became the first arena in 52 years to host both the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four and the Stanley Cup Final in the same year.
Las Vegas hosted the Frozen Four for two days in April. At that event, Denver was crowned champions of NCAA Division 1 men’s hockey.
On Saturday, the 10-year-old arena secured the rare feat by hosting Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, where the Knights took a 2-1 lead over the Carolina Hurricanes in a double-overtime thriller for the ages.
The confluence last occurred in 1974, when the now-defunct Boston Garden hosted the Frozen Four and Stanley Cup Final games. The NHL Statistics and Information Group confirmed the Review-Journal’s investigation.
Minnesota won the college hockey title and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup final that year.
The Boston Garden also hosted both the Frozen Four and the Stanley Cup Final in 1972. That year was a double victory in Boston, with Boston University winning the hockey championship and the Boston Bruins defeating the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final.
The week of historic firsts continues Tuesday for Las Vegas, as it will mark the first time the city will host a regular-season Major League Baseball game and an NHL game on the same day.
