Kiwi batters punish England but Stokes keeps fighting
Returning England skipper Ben Stokes led a late fight but tons from Tom Latham and Devon Conway put New Zealand in control of the Trent Bridge decider
Ben Stokes’ return as England captain descended into a day of punishment before a late fightback gave his side a glimmer of hope in the Test decider against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
Stokes, back to lead the side after a turbulent fortnight in which he withdrew due to last week’s defeat at The Oval, lost a crucial toss to see the tourists post 4-361 in sweltering heat on a perfect battlefield, with Tom Latham (151) and Devon Conway (157) lashing the England bowlers on Thursday.
But after the openers made 317 in 73 overs, the highest ever partnership for New Zealand against England, they both departed in the space of seven balls and Stokes could take credit as four late wickets fell for 44 runs, including two wickets from the last two balls of the day.

Stokes, who had received an enthusiastic welcome from the Nottingham crowd, was the man who would finally provide the breakthrough, cramping fellow skipper Latham just outside off-stump and ensnaring the edge before Joe Root’s part-time spin forced Conway into a rare misjudgment.
There was then a late gift from Rachin Ravindra as he topped a Gus Atkinson hook, before Henry Nicholls pecked Jofra Archer behind to leave the hosts smiling after a day’s toil.
England failed to create a single clear chance in the first session, failed to assess an important lbw shout against Latham in the second and then saw wicketkeeper Jamie Smith drop a regular catch on the evening.
The score was 0-276 when Atkinson, also back in the side after joining Stokes on the night out with both men issuing written behavior warnings, had set Latham’s glove on 129.
The ball passed cleanly to Smith, but he somehow misinterpreted the flight and squandered the opportunity.
New Zealand had injuries to their leading wicket-taker, Matt Henry, and their leading run-scorer, Glenn Phillips, but their worries were put on hold – at least temporarily – once the coin fell in their favour, Latham progressing to a 17th Test ton and Conway an eighth.
It was not the first time they had combined in this way, having put on 323 for the first wicket against the West Indies at Mount Maunganui in December.
By lunch they had laid their foundation at 108 without loss. There was one missed opportunity early on, Latham tapping Jofra Archer through third slip just moments after Stokes had rearranged his cordon and removed the extra catcher.
The openers added another 105 between lunch and tea. Latham was hit in front of the stumps by Shoaib Bashir on 71. Perhaps sensing an inside limit, Stokes chose not to ask for DRS. If he had sent the decision upstairs, Latham would have been gone.
But the wheels came off in the early evening, with precious overs from Bashir and Tongue adding 25 to the total in just two overs, kicking off a spell of rapid scoring.
When Smith had the opportunity to end the suffering with a simple strike, he made the most egregious mistake of the day, adding to a list of dropped catches that now numbers double digits in the series.
