When I first started playing table tennis, it was just for fun. I never imagined how much I would learn from it – not just about the sport, but about myself. Competing has taught me discipline, resilience and most importantly, how to learn. As I got older and made the transition to coaching, I discovered something else: a passion for helping people grow. Coaching taught me the value of effective communication, adaptability and building meaningful relationships. Over the years I have had the opportunity to coach people from all over the world, many of whom did not speak English as their first language, a member of the Paralympic Class 11 (Intellectual Disability) national team, children from 5 years old and adults from 82 years old. Each student presented a unique challenge. I quickly realized that no two people learn the same way. Some responded best to direct feedback. Others needed encouragement. Some learned quickly; others needed more time. No matter who they were, it was my responsibility to help them succeed—not by expecting them to adapt to my teaching style, but by adapting my teaching style to them. Six weeks after moving into consulting at Cornerstone Advisors, I took some time to reflect with my mentor, Andrea Lipo. I realized that those same lessons still shape the way I approach my work today. When we help build better banks and credit unions, we’re not just helping institutions, we’re helping the people behind them. And just like coaching, effective advice is not about using the same approach for every client. It’s about understanding each person’s unique challenges, communicating in a way that suits them, and adapting to help them succeed. Parents often asked me whether it was worth registering their child for table tennis if the chances of becoming a professional were so slim. My answer was always the same: there’s a good chance they won’t become a professional player. But the lessons they will learn will stay with them for the rest of their lives. For me, I can say with confidence that my answer is still true.
