Wimbledon chiefs dispute players’ income claims as prize money row deepens | Wimbledon
The All England Club (AELTC) is questioning players’ claims that they receive 22% of tournament revenue in prize money from the Men’s Association of Tennis Professionals and Women’s Tennis Association tours, as the row over their pay and welfare continues.
AELTC CEO Sally Bolton said on Monday it had requested “financial information” from the players shortly after they announced they had canceled a planned protest to limit media activity for the first week of Wimbledon. Bolton declined to go into further detail, but the Guardian has learned that the AELTC is questioning whether the prize money awarded by the tours is as generous as the players claim.
The first request for information is said to have been made to the players’ main representative, American Larry Scott, at a meeting at the French Open last month, but has yet to be passed on.
During discussions with some players’ agents last weekend, another request was made, which led to them canceling their planned protest.
AELTC sources insist it remains committed to the players who share in Wimbledon’s growth and has consistently increased prize money in recent years, but wants to analyze the other side’s data to ensure it matches its own.
The players ultimately want all grand slams to spend 22% of their income on prize money, but at Wimbledon this year they had asked for 16%, which would have resulted in a fund of £71 million.
The AELTC ended up with a pot of £64.2 million, an increase of 20% on twelve months ago and 14.4% of turnover, which is increasing significantly every year.
Debbie Jevans, the AELTC chairman, further irritated players this month by saying there was “no point” in using income as the main metric in assessing prize money, leading to an announcement last week that a protest that started at the French Open in May would continue at Wimbledon.
While the AELTC are questioning their figures, the players are believed to be sticking with the 22% figure. The matter is complicated by the confidential nature of contracts at individual ATP and WTA tournaments, with players lobbying for full disclosure.
Despite this week’s truce, there is still resentment on the part of the players over what they see as delaying tactics by Wimbledon and the other grand slams, as the dispute has been going on for 15 months with little progress made.
