Devils re-sign Ben Steeves, Jakub Malek – Pro Hockey Rumors
The New Jersey Devils led a string of minor league signings on Monday afternoon. At the top of the list is forward Ben Steeves who has redrawn a one-year, two-way contract with New Jersey. The deal includes a salary of $850,000 at the NHL level and $150,000 in the minors.
Steeves signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Devils in 2024. He spent both seasons of the deal on loan to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, where Steeves was able to fill an impactful center-six role. He scored 28 points in 60 games of his AHL rookie season in 2024-2025. With that baseline under him, Steeves emerged as a confident grinder this year. He scored 23 goals and 45 points, while also racking up 100 penalty minutes in 72 games in the 2025-26 season.
Steeves was one of only three AHL players under 5’10” to reach the century mark in penalty minutes. His mix of hard forechecks and rising scoring could be encouraging for the Devils, though his size could still limit his lead in the NHL. A one-year deal gives Steeves another chance to prove he’s worthy of an NHL call-up.
New Jersey also re-signed a goaltender Jakub Malek to a two-year, two-way agreement. Malek’s next contract will pay $850,000 at the NHL level and $175,000 at the AHL level next season, then grow to $900,000 at the NHL level and $275,000 at the AHL level in 2027-2028. $300,000 of the deal is guaranteed. Malek played his first season in North America this year. He spent most of his time with the Utica Comets of the AHL, where he recorded 13 wins and an .895 save percentage in 31 games. He also posted one win and a .930 save percentage in two ECHL games.
Malek played for Ilves Tampere of the Liiga, Finland’s top league, from 2022 to 2025. He split starts in each season, yet still posted 40 wins and a .912 save percentage in 82 appearances. Malek had a solid start to his tenure in North America and will now have the opportunity to fill Utica’s starting role. His chances of securing the spot in the next two years are good Nico Dawswho should earn promotion to the NHL in 2027 but could split time between leagues next season.
