Lawyer goes to work for cricket money
ALG senior staff member Cecelia Joyce, president of the Irish Cricketers’ Association and former Republic of Ireland international, has said she wants to see good pay for female cricketers.
Cecelia Joyce played 100 times for Ireland for little financial reward.
Meanwhile, her brothers, including international Ed Joyce, who played for both the Irish and England national cricket teams, made their living playing cricket.
Cecelia Joyce is President of the Players Association and in that role represents all male and female international players – including in negotiations with Cricket Ireland on contract structures.
“I also sit on the board of the World Cricketers’ Association, which represents players from 17 countries, including the majority of the top cricketing nations,” she said.
“It’s a bit of a crusade to get women properly valued,” she said.
‘Leverage equals action’ is the slogan of the ALG commercial litigation lawyer, who has opened the batting for the Irish women’s team for almost two decades.
Joyce led campaigns on player spending and mileage, as well as replacement payments, to continue paying rent or mortgage.
That led to female players being given part-time contracts, and eventually full-time contracts.
Better conditions
“I ask my players to think of their teammates in the same jersey, and in a few years to think of themselves and fight for better conditions, not only for themselves now, but also for their past and future selves,” she said in a recent interview with CricExec, cricket’s only trade magazine.
It’s often the lower-paid players who make proportionately the most sacrifices, she adds.
Joyce also talked about how the franchise era complicates player pay as more and more players choose lucrative club contracts over international cricket, leading to a ‘team of one’.
“We will have to ensure that players see themselves as global citizens – that they feel connected to the global player movement,” she told the publication.
Joyce also notes that as European countries become more involved in a sport, regulations tend to improve.
The establishment of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Dublin and the rise of Europe’s cricketing nations – Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy – could shake things up, she believes.
Player movement
“It will be very interesting to see how that impacts player movement and the sport in general,” she told CricExec.
“Whether it is an international governing body or not, the Court of Justice of the European Union requires entities engaged in commercial agreements to comply with the principles of free movement and competition law. I see real opportunities there.”
The number of cricketers in Ireland is growing rapidly, with total participation now exceeding 50,000.
The greater Dublin region has the most players, with around 60% from South Asia.
