A fight breaks out at Wimbledon between bad tennis girls

A controversy arose Wimbledon between the infamous bad girls Jelena Ostapenko and Laura Siegemund in a row due to a time violation.

In the decisive tie-break of the mixed doubles match, Siegemund received a time violation from referee Jonas Welte with the score 7–7, before losing the match together with partner Édouard Roger-Vasselin.

Siegemund responded to the decision by throwing the ball away after losing her first serve, before missing her second serve long and losing the point.

Both Siegemund and Roger-Vasselin then confronted the referee to challenge the decision, and both were given a warning. Siegemund argued that the referee had failed to penalize opponent Ostapenko and called the decision “unbelievable”.

Siegemund said: ‘Every time in a big moment she throws the ball up 18 times, and that’s nothing, and once I’m over time and it’s a big point and you give it to me [the time violation]it’s incredible. She did it and you did nothing.”

Ostapenko and her partner, Marcelo Arévalo, won the match shortly after the point, but the dispute did not end.

There was so little love lost between Ostapenko and Siegemund that they refused to shake hands after the match, although the Latvian did shake hands with Roger-Vasselin at the end of the match.

“If she was late every time, you would have said to her: ‘Come on Laura, you’re a bit late’,” Roger-Vasselin told referee Welte, before adding it was a “terrible move”.

“Exactly, but that was not the case,” Welte said, before ordering the players who lost the match to talk about it off the field.

‘She has to learn to lose’

Siegemund then appeared to storm off the court, while Ostapenko, after celebrating the victory, returned to intervene in the dispute. “Finally, someone is not afraid to do that if she needs two minutes between serving and before serving. Everyone knows this,” Ostapenko told Roger-Vasselin, before adding that Siegemund “has to learn to lose.”

The pair then chatted further about the decision, with Ostapenko mentioning the time Siegemund takes in each match she plays, rather than the specific match at SW19, and saying the German’s behavior was also “not very nice”.

Both women are known for their unsavory antics. That was only last year Ostapenko denied being racist after she accused American tennis player Taylor Townsend of ‘not having lessons’ while criticizing her training.

In 2021, Ajla Tomljanovic was convinced that Ostapenko was feigning an injury when she requested a medical timeout as the Australian was about to serve.

She was also fined and booed from the court, again at Wimbledon, for throwing a water bottle at a chair after a loss to Tatjana Maria in 2022.

Last year there was also an exchange with Aryna Sabalenka, another with Iga Swiatek, and a protest at Wimbledon when she lifted her skirt to reveal dark green shorts, presumably to comment on the dress code.

Siegemund was criticized earlier this year for her delaying tactics during a grueling match against Alexandra Eala, who raised her concerns with the referee.

In 2023, Siegemund was accused by American Coco Gauff of deliberately wasting time by running her service clock at the US Open, saying the German supporters had “no respect” after cheering her mistakes and disrupting her serve.
