Bill Napier and DJ Laway talk about the football battle in Florida

Former Florida football coach Steve Spurrier often referred to summer as “talking season,” a chance for players and coaches to share their thoughts before the fall.

This week, former quarterback DJ Lagway and former coach Billy Napier made it clear why things didn’t work out Florida Gators.

Lagway and Napier combined for a 10-8, which wasn’t good enough for Napier to keep his job as UF coach.

In an On3 article published July 7, Napier called himself “stubborn” for not hiring an offensive coordinator and said he and his staff were overwhelmed by the responsibilities that came with drafting rosters during the Name, Image and Likeness era.

“We were really struggling to manage the workload of NIL and the portal,” Napier told On3’s Wilson Alexander. “I think overall the work there became more and more demanding in terms of my responsibility to our team and our entire organization. So for me, in general, if I can summarize it, I would say: the ability to delegate and hire exceptional people in certain areas and hand more responsibility to those guys and allow them to do their job at a high level.”

Represents Baylor at Big 12 Media Days on July 7Lagway cited health issues that affected his confidence last season, when he went 4-8 as a starter for UF. That included a five-interception game against LSU, which passed for just 61 yards against Miami, and a three-interception game against Kentucky, which led to him being benched at halftime.

Lagway did not pitch in the spring of 2025 due to shoulder and groin problems and suffered a calf injury over the summer that kept him from doing live reps until the final week of fall camp. He finished the season rushing for 2,264 yards with 16 TDs and 14 interceptions before transferring to Baylor last December.

“Yes, I really say the cultivation of both (health and mental),” Lagway said at Big 12 media day. “To be able to, when I wasn’t healthy, really not knowing the mental side of it, and then when I was healthy, to be able to fight the mental battle because I didn’t have the number of reps that I needed to go out there and perform on the field, so to be able to combat both, that was a great (battle).”
