Apple announced a ton of new features for iOS 18 at its developer conference event on Monday, many of which are aimed at enhancing its Siri assistant and giving iPhone users more artificial intelligence tools.

AI-packed updates coming this fall will help the billions of people who use the company's devices get more done in less time, while also giving them access to creative tools to liven things up. For example, Apple is using AI to help users create emojis, called “Genmojis,” on the fly to match the mood they want to convey.

The full set of upcoming AI features will only work on the latest iPhone 15 series as they require advanced processors, but there's still plenty of room for upgrades for all iPhone owners.

Here are some of the great new features coming with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence.

Scheduled texts, tap to reply, RCSApple has confirmed that it's introducing a technology called Rich Communications Services (RCS) to the iMessage app that should improve the quality and security of texting between iPhones and devices running Android software, such as the Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel.

Another upcoming change to the iPhone's messaging app will allow users to write texts in advance (or let an AI tool write them) and schedule them to be sent automatically at a specific time.

Additionally, Apple is introducing a series of animated tapbacks that allow users to instantly reply with emojis and stickers, giving the app similar functionality to other messaging platforms like Google Chat and WhatsApp.

AI Tools and Data Privacy Apple's new AI platform, called “Apple Intelligence,” will help Siri take actions across apps, expanding the Assistant's scope of capabilities. AI will also help manage and prioritize notifications, and summarize text in Search, Mail, and other apps. Like other popular generation AI platforms, it will also help with text composition and can change the tone of text.

But Apple has tried hard to convince consumers that its iPhones can't be used to spy on people, using chip technology to process most of its AI-powered features on the device itself rather than in a distant data center known as “the cloud,” keeping user data local.

When an Apple user makes an AI request that requires more computing power than is available on the device, the task is handled by a system the company calls a “private cloud” to protect personal data.

More Screen Customization and Control Center Options With the arrival of iOS 18, iPhone users will have more options to arrange apps and resize icons and widgets on their Home Screen. A new dark mode look and tint effect will also be available for further customization.

The Control Center has also been redesigned to give users access to even more features with just one tap, and it now allows for the addition of third-party app options, such as remote car start.

Password CollectionAll of Apple's platforms (iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro) are getting a new dedicated passwords app.

The new app gives you access to all your passwords in one place, including Wi-Fi passwords, as well as some authenticator tools, and Apple also claims that the app will alert you if certain passwords have been compromised.
