IBM and Girls Who Code Executives to Lead New York Emerging Technology Commission

The chief executives of IBM and the nonprofit Girls Who Code will lead a new advisory committee aimed at jumpstarting New York state's emerging tech economy.

Gov. Kathy Hockle announced last week that the new commission aims to boost New York's reputation as a place to “grow, innovate and begin to create the technologies of the future.” The new group is part of the governor's plan to spur the adoption and development of new technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence.

“This Emerging Technology Advisory Council will help us seize that momentum and build a modern, inclusive economy driven by artificial intelligence, semiconductors and other fast-growing sectors, creating opportunity for countless New Yorkers,” Hawkle said in a press release.

The state released the committee's inaugural list of 18 members on Thursday, including Girls Who Code CEO Tarika Barrett and IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, who will serve as co-chairs of the group. Other chief executives include executives from Pfizer, Robinhood, MongoDB, Micron and JetBlue.

According to the announcement, the committee will be tasked with making recommendations to the state on how to accelerate the development and adoption of various technologies, prepare the workforce and “capitalize on the opportunities.” The first six months of the project will focus on AI.

The committee follows Hockle's creation of Empire AI in his fiscal 2025 budget, a consortium to help advance projects such as a $275 million AI Computing Center on the University at Buffalo campus. The effort is supported by seven founding institutions: Columbia University, Cornell University, New York University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, State University of New York, City University of New York and Flatiron Institute.

As governors seek to set guardrails and better understand the rapidly evolving field of generative artificial intelligence, economic and workforce development is on the agenda for many states. California, which announced last week that it had signed the first state generative AI contract, highlighted the potential economic benefits of developing the technology in a task force report released in November.
