This has allowed Rainbolt to become the man destined to live inside a map of everything, discerning reality through the vapors of data. But as I watched him sling a basketball at the hoop on a court in Portugal that I'd discovered for the first time through Street View, I realized there was another reason I didn't want to stop watching: The map seemed to heighten Rainbolt's attention to reality, to nurture his love of the world.

For Rainbolt, the most mundane moments are now filled with little flashes of revelation and recognition. Touching Thai grass for the first time, lost in its texture and color on the computer, feels infinitely more moving. It's the excitement of meeting a longtime pen pal in person, or going on a first date with an old crush. Rainbolt uses Internet cartography to heighten the tension of the world, blending the virtual and the real to make both more enjoyable. “With the mountain, depression can't be real,” he said last July in a video previewing his upcoming climb of Kilimanjaro. His route to the summit was the same one that Google Street View cameras had taken a decade earlier.

On his first full day outside of North America, Rainbold stepped out to lunch in Germany when a blue car with a camera mounted on its roof passed him, driving slowly around the city and collecting new data for Street View.
