What does the blue part mean?

I'll show you how to get the blue outline and what it can help you with.

Not all features of Google's map service are widely known, which is not surprising since some are hidden somewhere in a submenu and some of them may only be visible temporarily for testing purposes.

It's pretty much the same as the blue part. This can be displayed as an overlay on the current map. It's a useful tool, but it doesn't seem to be complete yet.

The blue area indicates the operating range

The blue contours indicate the distances that can be reached within 15 minutes from the selected location, both by car and on foot. You can also expand the radius to 30 minutes, which will necessarily increase the size of the blue area.

Google Maps' “Travel Period” feature

Where can I find this feature?

Unfortunately, current traffic conditions are not taken into account, public transport is not included in the “travel time” feature, and it is currently only available on the desktop version of Google Maps in your browser.

The “Travel Period” feature can be found under the Map Tools overlay. To do this, first go to “Levels” and then “Other”. You will see “Travel Period” and can enable it with another click.

You'll see a blue area in the map section and an additional menu will appear at the bottom of the screen, where you can select “Car” or “Walk” and set the time to 15 or 30 minutes.

Google Maps' “Travel Period” feature

Not available in the app

The “Travel Dates” tool is especially useful when searching for hotels, attractions, and restaurants in unfamiliar areas. Unfortunately, this feature is not currently (yet) available on iOS or Android. This tool is much more useful, especially on a smartphone than on a desktop.

It remains to be seen if and how this tool will be integrated into the mobile apps, and it's entirely possible that the “trip duration” feature will be removed again.
