Humanoid robots are the center of attention at Beijing Hi-Tech Expo as Chinese companies push for new tech innovations

At the 2024 Beijing International Hi-Tech Expo, held in Beijing from July 13 to 16, many humanoid robots that can jump and run like humans, deliver coffee nimbly and converse with people showed off their skills and interacted with visitors.

Standing 1.7 metres tall and weighing 55 kilograms, the human-like Huitong 7 can perform a variety of multi-modal movements, including walking, running, jumping, falling, rolling and crawling. It can jump up to half a metre high and one metre distance, making it the tallest and farthest-jumping motorised humanoid robot in the world.

“90 percent of the robot's hardware is domestically produced. We mainly aim for applications in specialized fields such as emergency rescue, firefighting and other dangerous situations,” a Haribit representative told the Global Times on Tuesday.

The employee said the robot is not commercially available on a large scale and is mainly suitable for specific applications due to its high price tag of 3 million yuan (about $428,571). “We are currently discussing possible cooperation with various manufacturers and institutions,” he said.

Another doll-like robot also attracted a lot of attention. Named the Intelligent Companion Robot, it was developed by a team of Chinese university students with a 95 percent domestic production rate. The device is about the size of a lamp and is perfect for placing on a desk.

“This type of communication robot has been sold overseas, including in the United States. But our model stands out with its human-like facial expressions, movements and tone of voice, allowing for more natural interactions. It is the world's first robot with a family-friendly long-term memory function that can record human conversations and facial expressions and allows users to choose what to remember,” Wang Chenghao, product director at Tech Voyage, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

“We plan to launch the product on Chinese e-commerce platforms in 2025 at a competitive price of around 5,000 yuan,” Wang said.

In recent years, many Chinese companies, both large and small, have embarked on the development of humanoid robots, and the models of robots tailored to specific scenarios are becoming increasingly diverse. This diversification is largely due to the advancement of Chinese companies' own technologies, covering both software and hardware.

But the transition from developing humanoid robots to mass commercialization in China is expected to take five to six years, and experts say there are many hurdles to overcome.

Currently, commercial humanoid robots are mainly employed in industrial sectors such as metallurgy (e.g., steel manufacturing), where larger models are often used to create specialized robots for high-risk tasks. What's more, communicative humanoid robots are easy to manufacture and affordable, making them easier to bring to market, Liu Gang, chief economist at the China New Generation AI Development Strategy Institute, told the Global Times on Friday.

“In contrast, commercializing service humanoid robots remains a difficult task. The intelligence level of robots is significantly lower than that of the human brain, with even top models achieving only 0.2 percent of human capability, making it difficult for them to interact naturally with humans. And the high cost of robots makes them out of reach of most consumers,” Liu said.

“We rely on imports for some components, such as joints and software. We are slightly behind developed countries in the area of embodied intelligence. But China is promoting the development of humanoid robots with heavy investment. Once domestic production of parts accelerates, more Chinese companies will engage in research and development,” Liu said.

According to a recent report by state-run CCTV, China's humanoid robot industry is expected to reach 20 billion yuan by 2026. Industry observers say humanoid robots are a future industry that requires cross-industry integration, and Chinese companies are keen to step up research and development.
