Another earthquake shakes Puerto Rico, destroying at least one museum in an area still recovering from Hurricane Maria

The last wave of seismic activity in Puerto Rico last weekend continued with a 5.5-magnitude earthquake that struck on Saturday morning and severely damaged the Musique de Ponce Museum, a memorial to protest the civil rights of 1937 that left 19 dead and two police officers. .

Pictures of the Museo de la Masacre Museum on Facebook show a partial collapse of the museum’s façade and a wrapped balcony, with piles of rubble on the street. According to El Universal, the building previously suffered slight damage to the roof of the balcony.

The island has suffered from a series of earthquakes since December, including “six events of 5.5 and greater and more than a thousand of 3.0 and greater events,” according to a statement from the US Geological Service.

The last earthquake was concentrated on the island’s southern coast, near Talapua, about 80 miles south of San Juan.

Continuous seismic activity is particularly pungent to a society still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, and comes amid the global health crisis.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency suspended field operations, which were launched after the December earthquakes, until at least May 25, but “individuals continue to work on the island to support the December 28-February 4 earthquake survivors and the ongoing aftershocks,” wrote the representative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In an email to Artnet News, stating that the agency was remote reviewing and approving relief assistance requests.

Close to Museo de la Masacre is Casa Paoli, a historical house museum in Ponce that is also reported to have been damaged. The museum did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Artnet News.

The nearby Museo de Arte de Ponce Museum, which was badly hit by January earthquakes, was spared this time. “We are glad to mention that there was no further damage to our building,” Alejandra Peña Gutierrez, the museum’s director, wrote in an email to Artnet News.

The museum was closed indefinitely in January after the non-structural damage to its main building, as well as three damaged sculptures. She maintained a list of off-site educational programs and introduced a new social media initiative called ConectARTE.

Gutierrez said that her plan is to continue reforms and prepare the museum to reopen it, but added that “we must follow the protocols in compliance with the requirements set by the Puerto Rican government in the midst of mandatory closures.”
