Rescue workers assess the stability of the site after moving pieces of debris into the Champlain Tower. They are assisted by Army agency engineers who are often called upon after hurricanes and other disasters.

Two days after the 13-story building collapsed, the Army Corps dispatched six engineers and logistics experts at Florida’s request. The team includes a structural engineer and two geologists.

“One of the big challenges is just trying to make sure everyone has the same information they’re working on and has the same understanding of any incident plan that guides operations.”

John Campbell is the Corps’ chief of communications. He says the engineers are helping investigators at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. They are trying to determine why the building suddenly collapsed.

“The foundation of any structure interacts with the soil and with the geology of any given area, so I will use the term marriage between the foundation and the geological features of any given area.”

Campbell says the engineers also have the experience to help guide rescuers and make sure their digging doesn’t destabilize the rubble pile further.

“So geotechnologists provide expertise in the area of ​​risks that may be associated with these special features.”

The Corps also assisted after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Oklahoma City bombing and the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
