Tracy Austin claims Wimbledon champion Emma Radocano is conducting an “earthquake” for tennis

Tracy Austin believes Emma Raducano has the skills to reach the top of the game after continuing her fantasy novel at Wimbledon.

The 18-year-old became the youngest British woman to reach the fourth round at SW19 with a stunning 6-3 7-5 victory over Sorana Kirstia in the first court.

Raducanu played her first WTA Tour match just last month and is now in the second week of the Grand Slam, where her life is set to change forever.

Austin knows what it takes to be a young star, winning the US Open at the age of 16, and the British girl, who put her tennis career on hold for a year to study for A-Levels, hopes.

“It was a small step up incrementally, and this will be overnight,” the American said on the BBC. “I had never heard of Emma Radocano before this week, now welcome to the world of tennis. Everyone will know who she is.

“This is such a big earthquake in tennis that someone so young… she wasn’t talented with this match, she took it.

“Thirty winners, I think she’s got a great head on her shoulders, she looks very well-knit and that’s going to help her, that foundation.

“She’s still ranked outside the top 200, it won’t be easy after such a high rise, but she definitely has the skill set.”

Raducano’s reward is a fourth-round meeting with world number 75 Ajla Tomljanovic and Austin believes he can win it.

“You don’t get carried away. We talked about how open the women’s field is, and now it’s more open than we thought.

“Tomljanovic hasn’t been that deep in the slam so she is nervous. If she can beat Kirstia, she can beat Tomljanovic.”

Former British top seed Laura Robson who won the junior title in 2009, was impressed by Raducanu’s show.

“All I can say is ‘Wow’ because that was a great performance,” she said on BBC 5 Live. “These young players believed from the start of the match and that is the whole attitude you showed us today.

“Yeah I got nervous in the second set, of course I did, but she regrouped, and it took her time.

“She looked much older than she is because of the way she behaves today, she looked like an experienced player.

“I am so annoying for her because it was a really tough year not being able to play. She was focusing on her exams but now she has this moment to enjoy.”
