Sacramento search and rescue team sends two people to Florida – Good day Sacramento

Sacramento (CBS13) – Two members of the Sacramento metropolitan search and rescue team arrived in Florida Saturday morning to assist with recovery efforts in the collapse of the Surfside condominium.

Demolition workers plan to demolish the remainder of a partially collapsed building in South Florida before an approaching storm increases fears that the structure could collapse on its own. A senior Miami-Dade fire official tells relatives of people missing under the rubble that workers plan to demolish the rest of the building as soon as Sunday.

Governor Ron DeSantis says the order is not structurally sound and that bringing it down would protect lifeguards. The confirmed death toll from the avalanche rose to 24 as two more bodies were discovered under the rubble.

Sacramento Fire construction engineers Zachary Siviglia and Jon Sampson will assist with the recovery effort, according to a Sacramento Fire spokesperson.

The pair are part of Urban Search and Rescue California Taskforce 7 based in Sacramento and will work directly with the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Florida.

They were approved for deployment to Seaside by the state’s emergency service office on Friday. They are joined by other search and rescue teams based in Orange County and San Diego.
