Fraction: No tsunami from the Kahulawi earthquake:

No tsunami expected after a 4.2 earthquake (initial magnitude 4.0) reported at 7:41 am on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 in the deep ocean south of Kahulawi. It has been modified several times after further evaluation by the USGS.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10.5 km and was located near the following areas:

Kalaoa, Hawaii, 78.9 km (49 mi) ESE Population: 9644 Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 79.9 km (49.7 mi) ESE Population: 11975 Kīhei, Hawaii, 101.9 km (63.3 mi) NNE Population: 20,881 Lahaina, Hawaii, 110.2 km (68.5 mi)) Northern population: 11704 Honolulu, Hawaii, 197.9 km (123 mi) northwest

According to USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory scientist Ken Hoon, “The earthquake was likely caused by the oceanic plate modification from the weight of the island chain and posed no significant danger. The earthquake had no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kaulauea,” the warning center reported From the tsunami in the Pacific Ocean no tsunami was caused by the earthquake.”

According to HVO, “Weak shaking, with a maximum intensity of III on the modified Mercalli intensity scale, has been reported on the western side of Hawai’i Island and on Maui. At this intensity, no significant damage to buildings or structures would be expected.”

Reports of people feeling the earthquake were noted in various parts of Maui and the island of Hawaii. On the island of Maui, we have received reports of hair shaking in Wailuku, Kula, Kīhei and Lahaina. The largest number of sensory reports, as documented by the US Geological Survey, shows dozens of people who felt the earthquake in Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawaii.
