At least one person was killed in the earthquake in Iran, and causes panic in the capital

An earthquake near the highest mountain in Iran killed at least one person and shook the capital Tehran early Friday, forcing terrified residents to flee the buildings.

The US Geological Survey said that a shallow 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck at 00:48 am (2018 GMT) near the city of Damavand, 55 km (34 miles) east of Tehran.

Agence France-Presse correspondents reported that they had seen dozens of residents of the capital’s exit buildings for the safety of streets and parks.

Health Ministry spokesman Kyanosh Jahanpur said on Twitter that the tremor had killed one person and wounded seven others.

He called on people to “remain calm” and follow safety guidelines.

The US Geological Survey said on its website that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Its center south of Mount Damavand, a volcanic mountain with a height of 5,671 meters (18,606 feet) was the highest peak in Iran.

Iran sits on top of the main tectonic plates and suffers from frequent seismic activity.

An earthquake of 5.7 magnitude that shook the western village of Habash, on February 23, killing at least nine people across the border in neighboring Turkey.
