Atlanta family survives Miami apartment collapse

Sarah Near describes how she still tries to make up her mind about what she saw and what she survived.

Atlanta – For people who survived the Surfside apartment collapse, starting over is a process. Kaitlin Ross of 11Alive spoke Tuesday to a family who survived the meltdown and lost everything.

The Nir family moved from Atlanta to Florida last year.

“So many families, so many lovers. I don’t have any words. I just pray to God,” she said.

Sarah Nir said the past three weeks have been difficult and she is still trying to make up her mind about what she saw and what she survived.

“It was really quiet, so I started paying attention to the noise around me. I heard knocking. It sounded like someone was hanging pictures,” said Nir.

Nair described how she was awake with her son and daughter on June 24. She said when the noise rose, she went to speak to security to see what was going on—that’s when the garage collapsed.

“I told them, I screamed, run, it’s an earthquake, they run,” she said.

Nir’s apartment was on the first floor, and without wasting time she ran back to her family. Her son Gabriel introduced his account on Joseph Wax’s Instagram account.

“I feel like the ground is opening up from the front and my mother is starting to scream and the earthquake and the earthquake,” he said.

He said his mother and sister got out as fast as they could, and called 911.

He said, “I began to see all the white dust, like smoke, and heard the ground shake, it was a loud rumble, and I saw my mother and my sister, RUN! And I began to run and run.”

The Nir family was told that their first-floor apartment is now eight floors underground. They ran away with their lives but lost everything else

“I, and a lot of the survivors, don’t like asking for help,” she said. “We don’t want to feel hopeless.”

Nir said the survivors came together to try to support everyone who had lost someone in the meltdown.

“Right now everyone is around and hugging you, you’re in the center and people are thinking about you. But what happens after a month? People move on and you’re alone with the shock,” she said.

Nir wants to help however she can while she heals herself. She said anyone who wants to help can donate through the Miami Tragedy Fund.
