What serves us and what is the noise in these epidemic times

Usually, this time of year in Denali has a proactive advantage, calm before a storm of seasonal workers, tourists, and traffic hitting the park and neighboring communities. Needless to say, it was different this spring. Like most parts of the world, we all wait, but we don’t quite know what, except that it’s not the imminent arrival of bus loads from tourists.

Summer brings more people, and with more people, more noise. In recent years, this has included the sounds of a mobile asphalt plant and rock crusher in the middle of the neighborhood next to the park, on a sled hill outside the state / off-season. Denali Park Road, like any road, requires near-continuous maintenance, even parts that do not descend from the foot of the mountain, and this means the winding industrial construction of the house. Even in normal circumstances, I work from home, and last summer I kept a record table in my office to track how many times I felt an earthquake was a rock crusher (ground maintenance: 13. Earthquakes: 1). Some days, the smell of asphalt burning was so strong that you could not leave the windows open. I sat in my garden watching the seedlings shaking. Maintenance of roads, even in a wild destination, is a high-impact process.

In September, a side dump truck destroyed the mark at the intersection of the Parkes Highway in the ground. I have never liked this sign, but you are wondering if this is the type of driver you want along a road that kids, dogs, and the hiker sometimes visit. Someone supported the sign in the middle of the road, most of which are still there this spring, turning the stop sign around the mail.

Anchorage contractor, Bruhs Construction, overturned equipment in the pit. I stopped on one of the last cold evenings, and watched the kids – and the adults – throw themselves up on the hill above the orange plastic sleds. Almost some runners reached the portable operating theater door, and the tanks and platforms reflected the spring sun. The company returned to Denali this summer, where it finished paving work at the entrance to the park and was also stationed in the middle of the closed park to move gravel to the area where the map says the road should be, and find out how many years we can defend off gravity and climate with renewable contracts and dumper trucks.

Dana Bruhs, the owner of the company, also serves as chair of the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Corporation, or AIDEA. It has been in the news of AIDEA’s recent transfer of $ 35 million in state money away from small business support for the instead proposed Ambler Mining Road in the Brooks Domain. Mr. Bruhs cut the testimony of the audience at the first two meetings at the last minute in a phone call when the phone of an undisclosed person “The Horse Without a Name” broadcast to dozens of people on the line in the hope of talking about Alaskan business, landscapes, clean water and food security. “I don’t care” was the last word we heard from Mr. Bruhs that day. He explained at the next meeting that his frustration was due to the noise and not the callers, but his words definitely left a bad feeling about the process.

I mean, I see. It’s really frustrating to talk about someone else’s noise. It is an abominable song (“la la la la la la la la la”). However, the council didn’t seem to want to hear Alaska, they just wanted to speed up another road, another place to crush rocks in someone else’s backyard. The Brooks Range villages opposed to the Ambler road know what’s new: once the road is built, there will be no return.

With all the questions about next summer, the future of industrial tourism, the boom and bust that have defined this economy, it is troubling to think about what may or may not happen, tourists who will not drive on the paved road. But it is also an opportunity to pause, think about what parts of this economy serve us, think about what keeps our homes, lands and water safe and healthy, and what noise we are used to.

These are questions about which Alaskan residents should submit … well, you know.
