A Lafayette resident helps with recovery efforts after the devastating earthquake in Haiti

A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Haiti after this weekend’s devastating and deadly earthquake.

More than 1,400 people were killed and thousands more injured. The 7.2-magnitude earthquake destroyed more than 113,000 homes and hospitals are struggling to provide proper care.

Since Respire Haiti was founded in 2011, it has created resources such as schools, medical clinics, and athletic programs in Gressier, Haiti. Since their area was not affected by the earthquake, the group can help those in need.

“It was hard to see the destruction from afar and feel so helpless.”

Respire Haiti founder Megan Boudreaux has returned to the United States with her family. Once she found out her staff and students were safe in Haiti, they stepped in to help.

“Our team is actually spread out in a very small city called La Celle, which is an area that has been impacted and no one has really gone to. So we are trying to get resources on the ground. Respire Haiti is really ahead and they are,” Boudreaux said.

On Monday, authorities raised the death toll to more than 1,400 dead and 6,000 wounded.

Boudreau hopes the country will find some relief.

“The last few years have been really heartbreaking. There has been a lot of gang violence, a lot of political violence, the president was assassinated on July 7, and then now, this earthquake. It’s so much and the Haitian people are resilient,” Boudreau added.
