Earthquake has devastating financial impact on Haitian Americans in South Florida – CBS Miami

Miami (CBS Miami) – Rescue and recovery efforts continue in Haiti after another earthquake devastated the country.

But North Miami Mayor Phillip Beanne Aim says the devastation will be felt for people thousands of miles from the island.

“I think the 7.2 earthquake will have a lot of effects on the Haitian Americans who live here,” Bien-Aime said.

He went on to say that these effects include an unexpected financial impact for many Haitians living in South Florida.

“For the first generation of Haitian Americans who earn two and three dollars an hour working in hotels, restaurants, and farms, these people are now, living on a pension,” he said. “But they can’t make a living from that salary, so what they did was use their 401k, their savings, everything they had, and build something back home.”

Bien-Aime is among the Florida residents who have spent thousands building a property in his home country.

But according to Haitian officials, the 7.2-magnitude earthquake destroyed more than 7,000 homes and damaged another 5,000. And with so many of those properties built by Florida residents, the effects will soon hit local wallets.

More than 50% of buildings in Haiti, especially in the countryside, were built by expatriates. That means the people who used to live here,” said Bien-Aime, who added that most of the property is used by their families but that in the end Haitian Americans were supposed to retire back home.

This now means that many of them will have to start over with fewer resources than before.

“So you can see the impact not only in Haiti, but here in North Miami, in South Florida,” Bien-Aime said.
