Springfield Caravan of Hope Delivers Aid to Earthquake-ravaged Haiti

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Editor’s press release / KY3) – Disaster relief organization Caravan of Hope has over 3.5 million meals on the ground in Haiti and is now distributing them to people affected by the recent earthquake.

The convoy also delivers water purification systems, tarps, shelter materials, lanterns, hygiene kits, and medical supplies – all of which are much-needed items right now.

“Many of the communities in which we serve look like a war zone,” said Ryan Grapel of the Hope Disaster Services Convoy Team. Today, distribution operations are taking place in Li Kai. We will continue to provide more and more resources to the interior and rural areas every day.”

Before the earthquake, Caravan of Hope was feeding more than 100,000 children a school day through warehouses full of produce.

“Because of the Feed the Children in Haiti initiative, we are equipped with resources on the ground and teams that were able to respond immediately to provide hope and assistance to those in need,” said Hal Donaldson, President of Caravan of Hope.

The earthquake occurred about 78 miles west of Port-au-Prince – Haiti’s capital and most populous city. Government agencies reported that at least 1,900 people were killed and nearly 7,000 injured. This disaster came on the heels of Tropical Depression Fred, which brought strong winds and torrential rains to Haiti just a few days ago. Tropical Storm Grace affected Haiti in the following days, making it the third natural disaster to hit the island in one week.

“The people of Haiti have suffered a lot, and the country is still recovering from the 2010 earthquake,” Donaldson said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this earthquake, and the Caravan of Hope will continue to revive hope for the people of Haiti in the days ahead,”
