I remembered the Heipjin Lake earthquake, 62 years later

62 years ago, a powerful earthquake shook parts of Montana – forever changing the landscape of Yellowstone Park.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake of Hebegin Lake caused a massive landslide that killed 28 people in the park.

It can be felt hundreds of miles away.

Vic Miller was in the studio at KOOK Radio in Billings on the night of August 17, 1959, when the earthquake struck.

“My chair leaned against the wall, and it started to vibrate, and[a co-worker]said, ‘Oh my God, what is this? And I said, ‘It’s an earthquake.’ ‘I’ve felt one before,’ Miller said.

The next day, Miller was on a charter flight to West Yellowstone Airport to cover the earthquake.

Miller has covered a lot of big stories in his more than half a century of broadcasting as a reporter, broadcaster, and eventual general manager for KTVQ, but no bigger than this story.

“It was unbelievable. It was unbelievable. We flew over areas where the highway dropped 10 feet. It was crazy,” he recalls.

He will get some first interviews with the survivors.

“Some stories they have. One couple we spoke to was in a tent and had a flashlight and showed it outside, and said a rock the size of a Volkswagen had rolled in, but missed the tent. Another couple, as the water continued to rise, continued to crawl up the tree more and more.” And they were a couple maybe 6 years old, but they survived,” he recalls.

These were the lucky ones. At the time, Miller did not know how many died in the earthquake.

“It ended at 28 and of course 19 is still there and will be forever,” he says.

62 years later, it is a story he has never forgotten.

“You will wake up at night thinking about it for a while. Just talking to the survivors, they were terrified even the next day and the earthquake was over and they are still terrified.”

CBS picked up many of Miller’s reports on the aftermath of the earthquake and broadcast them across the country.

“It was of course the biggest story I ever covered on radio,” he says.
