University of Minnesota Duluth professor remembers the 2010 earthquake

Perrault says his family was among the missing in the country’s most devastating natural disaster, with an estimated 300,000 people missing.

Duluth, Minnesota – Jean Perrault, aka Rudy, is the orchestra director at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Perrault was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A country is now dealing with the aftermath of a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that has left nearly 2,000 dead and thousands injured.

“I knew right away, and the fact that it was 7.2 and not 7.0, I worried,” Perrault said.

It’s a familiar feeling. “After eleven years,” he said, “here we are again.”

In 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck outside the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, killing hundreds of thousands and leaving millions homeless. Perrault says his family was among the missing in the country’s most devastating natural disaster, with an estimated 300,000 people missing.

“It’s been a while,” he said, “but we found them, and everyone was counted.”

The latest earthquake comes as the country deals with the loss of its president and the spread of the delta variable. Adding to the devastation, Haiti was hit by heavy winds and rain from Tropical Storm Grace earlier this week.

“Grace just passed through Haiti and made efforts to get the victims and everyone else out,” he said. “It’s only safety first that started with the president’s assassination.”

While Perrault says his family is safe, he prays for all those affected and offers advice to those who want help.

“If they have a connection to local organizations in Haiti, that’s the way to go.”
