Orange County, Florida – A one-of-a-kind driving event was held on Saturday.

Orange County Commissioner Victoria Sibelin and restaurateur Dr. Donnell Richmond teamed up on a special fundraiser to sell Caribbean favorites to raise money for earthquake victims in Haiti.

“Today, we’re serving stewed chicken with red beans and rice legumes. We’re also serving up fried pork,” said Dr. Richmond.

Each meal is $10 and 100% of the proceeds go to Haiti.

The Haitian US Elected Officials Network helps screen organizations that directly serve the Haitian people.

“We know that our brothers and sisters in Haiti are suffering. They are still suffering and we just wanted to help them,” Commissioner Sibelin said.

Commissioner Sibelin and the doctor were both born in Haiti and still have a family there.

The small island nation was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake two weeks ago.

Dr. Richmond said: “I’m worried about the coronavirus. Now, I’m worried about the earthquake. What next?”.

He says he hears from his family in Haiti.

“They’re watching the storms every day now,” Richmond said. “It’s the aftermath.”

Supporters paid for their meals through Eventbrite.

Volunteers set up a makeshift car tour of Kann Caribbean Kitchens in Kirkman and were asked to stay in their cars while eating their meals.

The community leaders and volunteers hope that their donations will send an important message to Haiti.

“We have faith,” Commissioner Sibelin said. “We want them to continue to believe.”
