Aid airlift underway to earthquake-hit Haiti

The United States began distributing aid to Haiti after the earthquake earlier this month that killed more than 2,200 people and injured more than 12,000 others.

The aid transfers, which are set to last at least several weeks, have begun delivering fabrics, food and other supplies to some hard-hit areas of southern Haiti, The Associated Press reports.

The quake destroyed or destroyed nearly 130,000 homes as well as 59 health facilities, according to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The agency said the United Nations believes that about 650,000 people are in need of international assistance. More than 300 people are reportedly missing.

The United States pledged $32 million in aid to the country, which was already battling gang violence and the assassination of its president in July before the earthquake struck. In addition to the earthquake, the rainfall in Tropical Storm Grace also caused the destruction of the country’s infrastructure.

The US Southern Command has already delivered about 265,000 pounds of goods, of which 8,500 pounds were distributed only on Saturday, according to the news agency.
