The US Geological Survey said a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Tonopa early Friday morning.

Two other aftershocks near Tonopah, measuring 5.4, struck the area soon.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury in the small town of Tonopa, about three hours north of Las Vegas.

Part of the United States 95 – the main highway between Las Vegas and Reno – has been closed as state soldiers and sheriff deputies from Esmeralda and Mineral counties examined Highway and State Highway 360 for possible damage, according to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office.

Pictures of the Nevada Highway Highway patrol showed cracks in the United States of 95 that Trooper Hannah Deguy said was caused by the earthquake. Digoy said there were no reports of injuries and that crews were working to reopen the highway.

Captain David Borochovitz was also inspecting a report on potential damage to US 95, in a statement to KSNV-TV in Las Vegas. “Otherwise, a small group of people would be shaken.”

The earthquake struck first after four in the morning local time. It was originally classified as 6.4 before it was raised to 6.5.

“It is the largest earthquake to hit Nevada since 1954, when an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck the Fairview Peak District,” wrote Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismology Laboratory.

According to reports contributed by the U.S. Geological Survey, residents reported that they felt the earthquake in the far east such as Salt Lake City, Utah, and southwest of San Diego, over 750 miles of reported impacts.

“A lot of groceries have already been shaken on the shelves,” Keith Heste, an employee at a gas station in Tonopa, told the Las Vegas Review.

Hestey said that people who frequent the store were all talking about the earthquake.

Earthquakes, including 6.5, struck in the desert between Tonopah and Hawthorne, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory map for earthquakes.
