A university consortium of more than 125 member institutions makes free resources available to help K-12 teachers teach earthquakes as they happen.

Teachable Moments resources provide documentation, images, animations, data, and explanations behind seismology designed to engage students “in scientific research and [to] offers an important connection to real-life events,” according to outreach specialist Tammy Bravo Incorporated Incorporated Seismology (IRIS).

According to IRIS: “Each of the Teachable Moments lessons consists of a downloadable and editable PowerPoint presentation, available in Spanish and English and is related to a specific earthquake. Lessons include interpreted information on the USGS earthquake, regional tectonic maps and tectonic maps. Summaries and animations of the concept, seismic diagrams, images of damage and other information and risks of the event.” PDF files are also available.

Data is generated within hours of an earthquake and made available in a classroom-ready format that can also be customized. Resources can be accessed freely here.
