I am a big fan of nature’s documentaries. Some really good things have been released in the past few years. Short anthology: “African cats”, “Dolphin Reef” and “Born in China” (which, contrary to what you might think, relate to pandas, snow leopards … not coronavirus).

But my favorite is “The Penguins Walk”. This film records the astonishing story of how the Emperor’s penguins migrated to breed. Each year, several thousand of these stubborn birds walk – or, in fact, wander, 70 miles from the ocean to their breeding grounds.

When penguins arrive, they mate with husbands, and the female lays one egg. Then she passes her eggs to her husband, who carefully places her feet under his belly feather.

My father holds that egg on his feet for two months while the other lady and lady walk 70 miles back to the ocean to find food. During these two months, the emperor penguin awaits a male through temperatures as low as 70 degrees below zero, and loses about a third of his total weight.

Eventually the egg hatches, and the female returns. Each male path seeks his companion. Since more than a thousand penguins invite their wives at the same time, it just seems to us a bunch of bats. But somehow, every female in a way is able to discern her husband’s invitation and go to him. Isn’t that cool?

As human beings, our ears are not nearly fine-tuned. Every day we hear hundreds of voices: our husbands, children and fathers. We hear the voices of our friends, neighbors, co-workers and bosses. We hear hundreds of voices on TV, radio and grocery store, sometimes it just sounds like a lot of noise.

All these voices are fighting for our attention, and as followers of Jesus Christ, we want to know: “With hundreds of different voices in my ears, how can I determine the only voice I want to hear? How do I hear God’s voice?”

Let’s take a look at Elijah. In 1 Kings 19:11, the Lord told Elijah that he was about to pass. Immediately after he said that, “a mighty and mighty wind” flows through the mountains. But Elijah somehow knows that God is not in the wind.

Then a great earthquake shook the mountain. But Elijah somehow knows that God is not in the earthquake. Then a burning fire burned at the foot of the mountain. But again, Elijah knows that God is not in Hell.

Finally, at the end of verse 12, Elijah hears a pleasant whisper. Elijah immediately realizes that God is in the slightest whisper.

Amid the wind, earthquake, and fire that shake the earth, Elijah learns about God’s voice. Wouldn’t you like to be able to do that?

Let me share some thoughts on how to hear God’s voice.

The problem is not that God is not speaking

The problem is that you do not listen. God speaks to us in hundreds of different ways every day. He talks to us through prayer, people, our victories and even our failures and our pain. And the first way that God speaks to us is through His word.

If you want to hear God’s voice, just start reading. You’ll hear it – for sure! There is a reason we call the Bible “God’s Word.” Remember that the God of Heaven and Earth is a very personal God, and He speaks to us in a very personal way. It’s amazing how the Bible verse that you read a hundred times can come to life for the first time on a particular day, and you only know in your heart, “God is speaking to me now.”

God speaks to us more than we realize

We just don’t hear it because there’s a lot of noise drowning it out. We live in a very noisy world. For many of us, radio always works in our cars, and television always in our homes. In order to hear God’s whispers, you should strive to remove at least some of the background noise.

To do this, you need to practice a little self-discipline. Turn off the TV and radio. Go out in nature if you can. Get up early and enter the word of God before everyone else in the house wakes up and starts making noise. In order to hear God’s voice, you must be able to hear God’s voice. Logical?

You must want it – really, really

It’s easy to say, “I want to hear God’s voice.” But do you really want to hear God’s voice? In Jeremiah 29:13, God said: “You will seek me and find me when you ask me with all your heart.” Are you looking for God with all your heart?

Just as Mama Penguin’s desire to hear my father’s voice must be the desire of our heart to hear God’s voice. We must have hearts that love God and want to spend time with God and eager to hear God’s voice.

There are no shortcuts. It takes time, effort and practice. But you will seek, find and hear God when you search for him and listen with all your heart.

One last thing, and this is really important. If you’ve ever wondered whether or not the sound you are hearing is test the message with the word of God.

God never contradicts himself. His voice will always perfectly match his word. Not only is the Word of God the first way he speaks to us, but it also works as a standard that reveals whether or not the voice we are hearing is truly God’s voice.

Once again, God’s voice will always perfectly align with the word of God.
