Earthquakes persist in Iceland: no apparent intrusion of magma

Yet another earthquake with a magnitude exceeding 3 hit southwest Iceland during the night, according to Vedur.is. The earthquake struck at 2:07 and had a magnitude of 3.7. Its source was 1.2 km south-southwest of Mount Keeler. It was preceded by one at 10:10 pm yesterday that had a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale, and had its source 0.7 km south-southwest of Keeler. In all, seven earthquakes of magnitude 3 or more have hit the region since Monday.

The latest satellite images of the area show no sign of magma intrusion in connection with the ongoing swarm of earthquakes southwest of Mount Keeler, Morgunblaði reports. The intrusion of magma cannot be ruled out, since the onset of inflation generally takes a few days.

This came in a meeting of the Scientific Council of the Civil Protection and Emergency Management Department yesterday.

Lovisa Muehl Gumundsdottir, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, told mbl.is that so-called InSAR satellite imagery has been checked for possible inflation.

InSAR is a land deformation mapping technology. It uses radar images of the Earth’s surface, collected from orbiting satellites.

Loviza states that it is too early to predict what to expect and whether the current seismic activity could develop the way it did in February, when it culminated in the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano on March 19.

She admits that scientists at yesterday’s meeting disagreed about whether the current seismic activity involves intrusion of magma or earthquakes at the boundaries of tectonic plates. “The coming days will tell us,” she adds.

In the past days, there has been no visible volcanic activity at the site of the Vajradalsvilla eruption, although gas has been removed from the crater itself. When asked if the current swarm of earthquakes could signal the beginning of a new phase, Lovisa replied that it was still too early to tell.

It indicates that compared to the February earthquake swarm, the current seismic activity is concentrated in a much smaller area. In February, there were earthquakes in many parts of the Reykjanes Peninsula.
